President Joko Widodo officially launched the usage of 5G Underground Smart Mining technology on Thursday, January 9, on the PTFI mine site in Tembaga Pura, Timika, Papua.
Telkomsel’s 5G Underground Smart Mining technology enables PTFI to boost mining safety, implement artificial intelligence, design effective and efficient mining operations, and reduce environmental impact.
The President was pleased that this latest technology was supported by domestic human resources, especially from the Papua region, after checking its use on the Grasberg mine controlled by PT Freeport Indonesia.
This latest technology was verified and tested in PTFI mines before implementation. They carried out months of testing to seek out the perfect solutions and, most significantly, guarantee safety within the workplace.
At PTFI, 5G mining technology is being implemented through network and infrastructure modernization, in addition to the creation of a mobile edge computing platform. Thanks to technology, it is feasible to remotely control machines and even mining trucks. Control is feasible even above the earth’s surface.
By maximizing the usage of cameras, 5G technology also gives PTFI the chance to watch and reduce the chance of workplace accidents.
