Security Index 2021: Southeast Asian Capitals

Many individuals who come from relatively protected countries are likely to underestimate the importance of private safety. For example, it is usually the most important reason Latin America’s wealthiest people move. Many things can kill or hurt you, not only a person with a gun. Many deaths result from neglect or lack of developed social structures. For example, in China the homicide rate is low, however the variety of deaths attributable to falls, road accidents or natural disasters could be very high.

Cities with very small populations top the rankings, except Singapore, which receives essentially the most points in our rankings. European cities dominate most rankings, with Asian cities taking a powerful position. Statistically speaking, most deaths are caused and/or suffered by young people. Countries with low birth rates and older populations are likely to be safer. The exceptions are Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, but all Middle Eastern cities have high road fatality rates.

This rating is compiled and measured based on several different security elements. Homicide rates were taken from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. In case of missing data, information was taken from the statistics of the provincial police department. http://www.unodc.org/
