On November 14, the Philippines officially announced the emblem and theme of its 2026 ASEAN Chairmanship, kicking off diplomatic and technical preparations ahead of next 12 months’s ASEAN Summit.
The newly unveiled logo features 4 key symbols: rice stalk, weave pattern, wave and balangay. Together, they convey a strategic message about ASEAN’s identity and future direction.
Rice Stalk
The rice stalk symbolizes prosperity and food security, which is certainly one of the region’s priority issues. Each yellow seed represents an ASEAN member state, while the eleventh seed marks the entry of East Timor as the latest member of the regional community.
Weave pattern
The weave pattern reflects the strength that emerges from the interconnectedness of Southeast Asian nations. It represents diverse cultures, values and aspirations that come together to create a unified and lasting regional identity.
Each yellow thread signifies each member state’s unique contribution to the region’s progress, underscoring that diversity is at the center of ASEAN’s identity.

The blue wave element symbolizes ASEAN’s commitment to maritime security and cooperation.
It refers back to the waters that connect all Member States, spaces which have long served as channels for trade, interaction and regional solidarity.

The Balangay, the one item shown in red, draws inspiration from a standard pre-colonial Filipino boat.
It serves as a metaphor for ASEAN’s collective journey, as distinct nations with different identities move forward in the identical direction. The symbol reflects solidarity, unity and shared determination to face regional challenges together.

With the inauguration, the federal government outlined the policy direction for the upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship.
In his speech, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that the event of artificial intelligence (AI)-related policies might be a priority for the Philippines.
“In the area of peace and security, our Chairmanship will emphasize the responsible and ethical use of new technologies, in particular artificial intelligence (AI), to strengthen ASEAN’s ability to anticipate and respond to new and evolving security challenges,” he said.
The Philippines also highlighted using artificial intelligence in early warning systems, maritime monitoring, in addition to in humanitarian aid and disaster response.
