Malaysia’s tech future brightens as Microsoft invests $2.2 billion in cloud and artificial intelligence services

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made further commitments during his temporary trip to Southeast Asia. Shortly after announcing its investment in Indonesia, the corporate pledged to spend $2.2 billion over the subsequent 4 years to construct artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Malaysia.

After meeting with Nadella on Thursday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the investment would help Malaysia expand its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Similar to the corporate’s efforts in Indonesia, this investment is the most important in Microsoft’s 32-year history in Malaysia. The investment plan includes the event of cloud technology and AI infrastructure, providing AI training opportunities for 200,000 people and supporting developers within the country. The aim is for the southern Johor region to turn into a significant hub for artificial intelligence technology.

In its statement, Microsoft also revealed plans to work with the Malaysian government to determine a National Center of AI Excellence and improve the country’s cybersecurity capabilities.

Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Senator YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Abdul Aziz, said he was proud to work with the federal government to support the national artificial intelligence framework. This investment not only strengthens the country’s global competitiveness, but in addition promotes digital inclusion and economic growth, ensuring every Malaysian is included in the brand new digital era.

Indeed, Microsoft is increasing its efforts to support the worldwide development of artificial intelligence. Previously, Nadella announced a $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia, and Microsoft also plans to determine a regional data center in Thailand.

Microsoft also announced plans to speculate $2.9 billion in Japan and one other $1.5 billion in Abu Dhabi. This will bring Microsoft’s total investments in Asia to over $8 billion.
