Malaysia continues to steer Southeast Asia when it comes to 5G network performance. According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence report, the common 5G download speed in Malaysia is 451.79 megabytes per second (Mbps), surpassing the download speeds of Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.
Ookla, a world authority on connectivity analytics, reports that in Singapore the common 5G download speed is 329.73 Mbps, while in Thailand and the Philippines the download speed is 129.40 Mbps and 125.14 respectively Mbps. Additionally, Malaysia’s 5G network achieved the world’s highest consistency rating within the fourth quarter of 2023 (Q4 2023), reaching 97.3%.
This consistency rating indicates that 97.3 percent of Speedtest Intelligence samples on Malaysian 5G networks exceeded the consistency threshold, which is currently a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of three Mbps.
In comparison, other leading countries reminiscent of North Macedonia and the United Arab Emirates recorded lower cohesion scores of 94.1% and 93.9% respectively. In terms of 5G availability, Ookla notes that availability in Malaysia increased to 27.0% in Q4 2023 from 21.0% in Q1. Malaysia’s 5G rollout strategy includes implementing a Single Wholesale Network (SWN) model through the establishment of Malaysia’s Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) in 2021.
Since its launch over two years ago, Malaysia’s 5G network has performed consistently well, rating it as one in every of the best-performing 5G networks on this planet. The report also highlighted that each one states in Malaysia have seen at the least a 1.45-fold increase in overall mobile connection speeds across technologies.
Notably, Putrajaya, Malaysia’s government administrative city, boasts the country’s fastest average mobile download speed at 190.86 Mbps, a rise of over 2.5 times.
