First Southeast Asian leader to talk on the esteemed Oxford Union

Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad might be the primary Malaysian democratically elected ASEAN leader to be invited to deal with the Oxford Union.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman tweeted the excellent news on Tuesday evening (January 15), indicating that the event would happen after months of planning.

“Can’t wait! Malaysia, the tiger of Asia!” – he said, informing that the speech will happen on Friday (January 18).

The tweet was accompanied by a photograph of Dr Mahathir reading the December 3, 2018 invitation from Oxford Union president Daniel Wilkinson.

According to the Oxford Union’s official Facebook page, it’s probably the most prestigious association of speakers and debaters on the planet, with an “unrivaled fame for attracting international visitors and speakers to Oxford. It was founded in 1823 and its aim is to advertise debate and discussion not only at Oxford University but all over the world.

The Oxford Union hosted Morgan Freeman, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Natalie Portman, Johnny Depp, Stephen Fry, Anna Wintour, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Jackson, Shakira, Senator John McCain, General David Petraeus, Malala Yousafzai, Sepp Blatter and David Cameron, amongst others.
