PHOTOS: Winners of the 2017 BigPictures Wildlife Photo Contest

Fourth vintage BigPicture natural world photography competition goals to have a good time the variety of life on Earth and encourages people to guard and preserve it. The competition organized by the California Academy of Sciences received hundreds of entries, and listed here are the winners.

3. Synchronized Sleepers: Man/Nature FinalistFranco Banfi and his fellow divers were following a pod of sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the Commonwealth of Dominica when they suddenly seemed to fall into a vertical sleep.  Scientists discovered that they were first observed in 2008.  These massive marine animals spend about 7% of their time sleeping.  Photo: Franco Banfi

Synchronized Sleepers: Man/Nature FinalistFranco Banfi and his fellow divers were following a pod of sperm whales within the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the Commonwealth of Dominica once they suddenly appeared to fall right into a vertical sleep. 4. Kamokuna Lava Firehose 25: Winner of Landscapes, Waterscapes and Flora During the week of January, a steady flow of lava, known as a firehose, suddenly erupted from an underground lava tube at the base of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii and flowed into the Pacific Ocean.  When the molten rock came into contact with the cooler seawater, steam, sand and pieces of cooled lava were violently thrown into the air.  Photo: Jon Cornforth

5. Pandas Gone Mad: Man/Nature's Winner The Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center in China's Wolong Reserve has been breeding captive-bred giant pandas with the hope of one day re-introducing them to the wild.  To prevent young pandas from becoming attached to their owners, the center's staff wear costumes imitating the animals' distinctive black and white pattern.  Photo: Ami Vitale
5. Pandas Gone Mad: Man/Nature’s Winner The Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center in China’s Wolong Reserve has been breeding captive-bred giant pandas with the hope of at some point re-introducing them to the wild. To prevent baby pandas from bonding and becoming attached to their human caretakers, center staff wear costumes that mimic the animals’ distinctive black and white patterns. Photo: Ami Vitale

6. Snow Globe: Winged Life Winner Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico is home to a huge population of snow geese, in part due to the vast fields of grain that have grown along their migration routes over the past 60 years.  Coming down in huge flocks, geese leave a trail of mown vegetation and exposed terrain that can take decades to regenerate.  Photo: Denise Ippolito
