Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, will probably be equipped with a driverless train connecting three terminals. The so-called skytrain is anticipated to start operations in June.
According to state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Putra II (AP II), initially two 176-person-capacity rail carriages will connect Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
“Meanwhile, the Skytrain will be fully operational in August, with three 528-seater trains connecting Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3,” AP II CEO Muhammad Awaluddin said in a press statement on Wednesday.
He added that the Skytrain journey time will probably be 5 minutes and it would take 7 minutes to succeed in Terminal 1 from Terminal 3.
Passengers will have the opportunity to examine the Skytrain schedule on their smartphones via the Indonesia Airport app, he added.
“Since Soekarno-Hatta Airport will probably be transformed right into a transfer airport, the elevated railway [is important to] “to facilitate passengers’ movement between Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3,” he said, adding that the train will run at a speed of 60 kilometres per hour and will probably be equipped with Automatic Rail Transport (AGT) technology.
The investment cost of the project is estimated at 950 billion rupees (US$71.25 million), which incorporates the development of infrastructure and the acquisition of rolling stock.
The aerial tramway itself is being built by state-owned company PT LEN in cooperation with South Korean company Woojin, while state-owned construction company PT Wijaya Karya Tbk and PT Indulexco will probably be answerable for the infrastructure.
