Everything that happens up until that magical moment if you dive into the cool water is demanding.
It often begins with long journeys on planes, buses, cars and ferries. At some point, you might have to make a precarious transfer from one boat to a different, often in choppy waters.
Once you finally reach your destination, you spend time transporting heavy tanks and bags of kit, sometimes on hot, sandy beaches.
The thought that we were going to do that in Redang, Malaysia, with 34 disabled people and 62 volunteers got me considering.
Wheelchairs will not be allowed on the sand.
How do individuals with limited hand mobility dive?
How were we purported to get from the bus to the ferry to the ship?
Where there is a will, there is a way – an overused proverb, I do know. But it couldn’t be more appropriate if you see this group in motion.
Marine Discovery Dive is an annual event created by EK Lim and his friends. PSP (People Supporting People) Society Malaysia.
The group wanted to provide disabled people the chance to experience the ocean.
Many people never have this chance since it will not be physically available to them and this goes against the common belief that folks with disabilities mustn’t undertake such activities.
Well, People Support People debunks that myth.
This event goals to not only bring able-bodied and disabled people together to learn from and support one another, but in addition to indicate the disabled community that they will be strong and overcome their very own limitations.
One of the most precious lessons I actually have learned on this journey is that disability will not be about someone’s physical limitations. It is concerning the environment. If we work to make it accessible, individuals with disabilities could have the identical probability to achieve every little thing that able-bodied people do.
