Growing to 10 Billion by 2050: Coping with the Challenges of Rapid Population Growth

The world population will reach 8 billion by the tip of 2022. This population growth can function a driving force to enhance various points corresponding to development and economy. However, some groups have opposing views. Population growth can pose a threat and hinder development.

Often, some groups hold pessimistic views. These pessimistic views are supported by Malthus’ theory, which states that population grows geometrically while food production grows arithmetically. A big population in a rustic growing arithmetically implies that the potential for poverty and reduced prosperity in the long run can occur if population growth is just not well controlled.

So what are the essential problems within the rapidly increasing and uncontrolled growth of the world’s population? According to Kartomo Wirosuhardjo in his work entitled “Fundamentals of Demography”, there are 4 essential components/problems causing the rapid growth of the world’s population: births (fertility), deaths (mortality), immigration and emigration.

The 4 components are as follows:

  1. Mortality:The rate of mortality that happens at a given time and place as a result of certain aspects, including diseases and other aspects.
  2. Fertility: A term utilized in demography to indicate the number of kids born alive to a girl. It has recently been observed that many young women are marrying early, which allows them to have children at a young age.
  3. Immigration (pull aspects):Factors that attract people to an area.
  4. Emigration (push aspects): Factors that force or coerce individuals to depart their place of residence and move to a different. This could be seen in communities that migrate.

Today, the world population continues to grow and is predicted to achieve 10 billion by 2050. This implies that over the following 25 years, the world population will increase by 25% (2 billion people). This again poses a serious challenge for countries all over the world to be sure that prosperity and employment opportunities can be found to the broader population.
