Indonesia could have a national automobile brand (again) by 2026

Indonesia has asked Chinese automaker Geely Automotive Holdings to assist develop a domestically produced electric vehicle (EV) by 2025 or 2026, a senior government minister revealed on Tuesday. Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, who oversees natural resources and investment regulations, explained that Geely accepted this proposal. He stated, “I offered Geely the chance to provide cars in Indonesia under an Indonesian brand based on research done in Indonesia, and so they agreed.”

This offer includes Indonesia providing nickel ore needed to provide batteries for electric vehicles, however the research aspect have to be led by Indonesia. Indonesia is actively encouraging electric vehicle manufacturers to speculate within the country, leveraging its abundant reserves of nickel, a key ingredient in electric vehicle batteries. However, the success of those efforts to date has been mixed.

Following recent developments, VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle company, has announced its intention to speculate roughly USD 1.2 billion in Indonesia for the long run, including the establishment of a producing plant expected to begin operations in 2026. In addition, Indonesia has received production investment commitments electric vehicles from China’s Hozon New Energy Automobile and Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors. However, efforts to secure investment from major global electric vehicle makers reminiscent of Tesla of the United States and China’s BYD group, that are among the many world’s largest electric vehicle makers, have yet to materialize.
