In 2022, Malaysian passenger traffic increased significantly, reaching 52.7 million passengers, up from 10.72 million in 2021, across all local airport networks operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
Following the lifting of restrictions on interstate travel on October 11 last 12 months, the momentum of recovery in domestic passenger traffic continued in 2022, recording 36.2 million passengers annually, representing 69.6% of the 2019 level.
As 17 airlines restored services to 32 cities, “international passenger traffic recorded a complete of 16.5 million passengers,” in line with a MAHB statement released today. The countries with the best traffic are Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam and India.
The airport operator claimed that the addition of recent routes by 27 airlines to 38 locations contributed to the annual increase in passenger traffic.
Denpasar-Bali, Lahore, Ujung Padang, Male, Brisbane, Bangkok, Perth, Phuket, Batam and Bengaluru were among the many cities with the best growth in 2022 in comparison with 2021.
According to the report, a complete of 59 airlines flew to 84 foreign and 35 domestic destinations last 12 months, up from 48 airlines that flew to 51 international and 32 domestic destinations the 12 months before.
According to the MAHB entity, the year-end holiday season contributed to a major 31 percent increase in comparison with the previous month, enabling the group to attain 50 percent of 2019 levels for its Malaysian operations. December saw the best monthly passenger flow in 2022 – a complete of 6.8 million passengers.
It said that of the 6.8 million, “2.9 million were international passengers, the best recorded to date since borders reopened in April, and three.9 million were local passengers, a 33% increase on November 2022”.
Langkawi International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport had the best percentage growth in travelers among the many five international airports, 51% and 39% respectively.
