A Filipino student turned rotten vegetables into solar windows

Not all of the rotten gets forgotten.

Carvey Maigue, a student at Mapua University, proves that this statement is true in spite of everything. He has been nominated for a 2020 James Dyson Award for his recent invention called AuREUS. This device is in a position to transform rotten vegetables and fruit into clean and renewable electricity.

So what does AuREUS do?

The AuREUS system uses harvest waste, corresponding to rotten vegetables and fruits, to soak up scattered UV light from the sun and convert it into electricity. The system is installed in windows and partitions of buildings, using the identical technology, imitating the phenomenon of the northern lights. High-energy particles are absorbed by luminescent particles, which re-emit them as visible light.

Similar particles imitating rotten vegetables and fruits were suspended in a resin medium. When sunlight falls on it, the particles absorb and emit visible light along the perimeters, and the captured light will be converted into electricity.

AuREUS is certainly one of 1,800 other inventions by young inventors and design engineers from 27 countries around the globe. The criteria weren’t stringent, just “Design something to unravel an issue.”

Young inventors met virtually to debate solutions to global problems. Of all entries, only 20 were chosen to be awarded the title of International Winner, Sustainability Winner or International Runner-up by the James Dyson Foundation.

James Dyson himself will review each finalist. The winners will likely be announced on November 19.

“This year has brought enormous challenges, and if one thing is certain, our top 20 inventors have shown that young minds and unfiltered curiosity need a seat at the table,” says Tom Crawford, global director of sustainability. “There is always a need to solve problems, and the number and scope of this year’s entries show that the future of invention is bright.”
