Especially on the subject of the winners of the World’s Best Awards, it normally creates a tumultuous effect when Travel + Leisure readers collectively support an idea. When rating the world’s best cities, they have in mind hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, wealthy cultural history, outstanding attractions and, most recently, COVID-19 procedures.
After counting the votes and analyzing the information, we determine the result for every city and ultimately rank the 25 best cities on the planet.
After the WBA lists are made public, their results are examined by tens of 1000’s of individuals. These locations have gotten the idea of travel plans, interest in lesser-known winners is growing, and the consequences are felt in cities around the globe.
T+L annually asks readers to rate their travel experiences around the globe as a part of our World’s Best Awards survey. Readers are invited to precise their ideas about the perfect cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines and more. The cities were rated by readers based on their tourist attractions, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and overall value.
Comparing the highest cities of 2022 with the rankings from the previous 12 months, several interesting conclusions emerge. This 12 months, Florence returned to the highest five cities, rising from sixth to fourth place, while Udaipur in India dropped from second place to tenth.
San Miguel de Allende, which won last 12 months, took 2nd place and received quite a few accolades. One respondent noted, “The weather is wonderful, the music scene is great, and the food is delicious.” Unlike Kyoto, Japan, which dropped from fifth to 14th, Istanbul, Turkey, to fifth, and Ubud, Indonesia, to third, remained in the highest five.
Travelers visiting Ubud often seek seclusion while engaging in outdoor activities reminiscent of rafting, mountaineering, mountain biking, or just leisurely walks through rice fields or farms. It can also be home to the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, the biggest annual literary and humanities festival in Southeast Asia.
It’s no wonder that Ubud continues to be a middle of culture, art and natural beauty.
T+L readers also expressed latest admiration for other 2020 winners who were absent last 12 months, reminiscent of Mérida, Mexico (current position 12), a Yucatan resort praised as “among the best cities to go to for music, dance and gastronomy.” Seville is certainly one of the Spanish cities that returns this 12 months (no. 11). The capital of Andalusia was called “a good looking place to lose yourself” by one WBA voter and “charming” by one other.
