At least 14 people, most of them college students on a camping trip, died on Monday when their rented bus lost its brakes on a slope after which hit an electricity pole, Philippine authorities said.
Ten victims died on the scene and 4 others died at two hospitals within the accident that occurred within the hilly town of Tanay in Rizal province east of Manila, said Tanay disaster response officer Darlito Bati Jnr. More than 40 other people, including the driving force, were injured and brought to hospitals, with several of them in critical condition, Tanay authorities said.
Bati, who was amongst those that helped pull victims from the bus wreck, said most of the dead were piled in a pile of bodies outside the passenger cabin. The impact was so strong that it tore off a big piece of the bus’s roof and scattered the victims’ belongings.
