Singapore was recently ranked second within the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2017 Safe Cities Index, rating just behind Tokyo.
In 2016, island police recorded a complete of 135 days with none crime, including snatch thefts, home burglaries and robberies. Such a low crime rate signifies that many small businesses will not be concerned about shoplifting.
In fact, as CNBC recently noted, many local businesses take few precautions when closing up shop at night.
For example, in the bottom floor lobby of a mixed-use constructing within the downtown business district, many stores don’t have any windows, locks and even doors.
Located at Raffles Place, one in all Singapore’s busiest metro stations, the Starbucks has no formal doors. Rather, a small rope indicates when the shop is closed and all merchandise remains to be on display and inside easy reach of commuters.
But after all, surveillance could be very common within the city-state, which boasts about 5.5 million inhabitants.
Last yr, Singapore Police announced the PolCam 2.0 initiative, under which it should deploy tens of hundreds of additional surveillance cameras. As a part of its first initiative in 2012, the Police installed over 62,000 cameras.
