The restaurant rating group behind the World’s 50 Best Restaurants has released its annual list of the 50 best restaurants in Asia. For the second yr in a row, Singaporean restaurant Odette took first place on the virtual announcement, which replaced the same old awards ceremony.
Singapore-based Odette retained its No. 1 position for the second yr in a row, overtaking the CEO in Hong Kong and Tokyo The.
The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony, originally scheduled for a gala in Japan’s Saga Prefecture, was canceled in late February because of the spread of Covid-19. Instead, it will simply be a recorded video streamed online.
The 40-minute broadcast was preceded by a brief statement from William Drew, chief content officer of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, during which he mentioned the broader context of the event.
William Drew, Chief Content Officer of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, quotes: ABS-CBN“We are obviously going through unprecedented times both in the restaurant sector and across Asia.”
“That’s why it’s more important than ever to support restaurants across the continent in their recovery, recognize each other’s achievements over the past 12 months and spread the message of solidarity.”
In a video message, Drew reiterated: “This announcement is not a celebration. The goal is recognition. Now more than ever, the restaurant sector needs support: recognizing the hard work and talent of teams and individuals remains relevant; It is also important to show a sense of community and mutual respect.”

This yr’s top 50 list again features 4 continental powerhouses: Japan with 12 restaurants, China with 12 restaurants (including eight in Hong Kong and two in Macau); and 7 each in Thailand and Singapore. Also represented were Taiwan (4), South Korea (three), India (two), and Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines (one each).
