Renowned Indian e-commerce platform Bukalapak, in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), has launched the inaugural Indonesian Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Center, aiming to birth the long run of AI engineering within the country.
“AI engineering is severely lacking in Indonesia, which has led to the establishment of the first AI research center,” said Bukalapak CEO and founder Achmad Zaky on the Ideafest 2018 event in Jakarta on Friday, October 26.
Zaky argued that the supply of Indonesian AI is currently limited as many of the country’s AI experts decide to pursue a profession in a global technology company. He maintained that the power enables local talents to develop their capabilities within the country.
Bukalapak has pledged to ascertain a research center in multiple regions of Indonesia, corresponding to Medan, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, as a part of a large-scale try to attract software engineers from across the country.
Moreover, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rudiantara explained that the federal government can be providing a program to develop young talents within the digital industry through cooperation with world-renowned technology corporations corresponding to Microsoft, Cisco and Google.
East Ventures managing partner Wilson Cuaca said the country’s ecosystem is enabling the birth of many billion-dollar technology corporations. Given the Internet-savvy population, technology corporations are confident that they may expand their business scale in only a number of years. That is why investors include Indonesia amongst their potential markets.
There are currently 4 tech corporations valued at over $1 billion in Indonesia, including Go-Jek, Traveloka, Tokopedia and Bukalapak. Minister Rudiantara predicts that the long run “unicorn” company will come from the finance, education or healthcare technology industries.
