RANKING: 4G speeds in major Southeast Asian countries

A recent evaluation of regional wireless Internet services compared 4G download and upload speeds in 12 major East Asian cities.

Singapore and Seoul stood out because the clear winners, with download and upload speeds in each cities coming in at around one megabit per second (Mbps).

Other cities within the region have also handled this problem. Although 4G services have only recently launched within the last two years, each the capitals of Vietnam and Myanmar have proven to offer connectivity speeds comparable to those in the biggest cities of Taiwan and Japan.

However, this will be partly as a consequence of the indisputable fact that these Southeast Asian countries have fewer 4G consumers than their northern counterparts, and the report adds that each Yangon and Ho Chi Minh City could see a big drop in connection speeds as more customers will switch to 4G services.

In Southeast Asian cities where 4G download speeds are at or below the worldwide average – including Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Jakarta – the dominant network trends in these cities are focused on 4G availability relative to to hurry.

“Since 4G connections are significantly superior to 3G connections, it appears that Southeast Asian operators are willing to make LTE services available to the vast majority of their customers before paying attention to sheer speed,” the report said.

When it involves streaming content, even the slowest cities within the region, Phnom Penh and Jakarta, average “decent” speeds of around 4.9 Mbps.
