Indonesia plans to use to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032, announced the country’s president Joko Widodo.
This ruling got here after Saturday’s meeting with the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.
The country is currently hosting the Asian Games, the second largest multi-sport event on the earth after the Summer Olympics.
India, Australia and China also expressed interest within the tender.
“After the excellent experience at the Asian Games, we believe we can host the biggest sporting event,” Widodo said.
Currently, roughly 12,000 athletes from 45 countries compete in 60 different sports in Indonesia.
The Asian Games were only awarded to Indonesia 4 years ago after Vietnam withdrew for financial reasons, and the extent of organization was widely praised.
As host country, Indonesia delivered a spectacular opening ceremony and in addition exceeded its own expectations by winning 30 gold medals, ending fourth within the medal table.
Indonesia, which is predicted to be among the many world’s 10 largest economies by 2030, used the Games to vary the perception that it was within the “too difficult” basket, paving the best way for even greater baubles to host sporting events.
IOC President Bach welcomed Indonesia’s bid, adding that the Asian Games provided a “strong foundation” for the country’s 2032 bid.
“With this Asian Games, this great success, Indonesia has shown that it has all of the ingredients to make the Olympic Games successful,” Bach said.
“Here in Indonesia there is a great combination of friendliness and efficiency and that is what the Games are all about.”
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, will host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while the French capital Paris and the US city of Los Angeles will host the 2024 and 2028 Games respectively.
The Indian Olympic Association has already confirmed its interest within the 2032 bid, as has the Chinese city of Shanghai, although China’s capital, Beijing, will host the 2008 Summer Games and the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Neither India nor Indonesia has ever hosted the Olympics before.
