AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes doesn’t regret posting a shirtless photo on LinkedIn: ‘it brought me quite a lot of publicity’

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said he doesn’t regret posting a shirtless photo of himself on LinkedIn because the viral post earned him quite a lot of publicity.

Fernandes said CNBC in an article published Sunday that he posted the controversial photo in October for instance flexibility inside the framework Malaysian airline work culture.

“Do I regret it? NO. It gave me a lot of publicity,” he added.

The post, which has since been deleted, showed Fernandes being massaged by a person wearing an apron, a hairnet and a face mask. Fernandes appeared to be sitting topless on an office chair in the conference room.

“It was a stressful week and Veranita Yosephine suggested a massage,” Fernandes wrote within the post, referring to AirAsia Indonesia CEO Veranita Yosephine. “I have to love Indonesia and the culture of AirAsia that I can get a massage and meet with management.”
Fernandes’ photo divided users – some commented that he promoted a friendly work culture, others criticized him for unprofessionalism. In December, Fernandes published one other controversial post on the web site Instagramwhere he said he needed to go Singapore Airlines because AirAsia flights were full.

Fernandes told CNBC that he manages his own social media accounts and posts online without being reviewed by his PR team.

“I am transparent and social media it allows me to be very transparent. The disadvantage is that people will misrepresent and misunderstand the personality of Tony Fernandes,” he said. Fernandes and AirAsia didn’t immediately reply to Business Insider’s request for comment.
Fernandes is not the only CEO who recognizes the importance of leaders maintaining their very own social media accounts. At the 2023 World Government Summit. Elon Musk he said CEOs should “speak authentically” and write their very own tweets.
