South China Sea: The Philippines says Chinese maritime proposals are contrary to national interests

The Philippines’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that it had received several proposals related to maritime issues Chinabut added that they can’t be included because they’re contrary to the national interests of the Southeast Asian country.
The Foreign Ministry said China’s proposals included one which “insisted on actions that may very well be regarded as consent or recognition of Chinese control and administration over China.” [Second Thomas Shoal] and that Philippines he couldn’t consider such a proposal “without violating the structure or international law.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) was responding to a Manila Times news article that quoted an unnamed “top Chinese official” as saying that Beijing’s proposals to normalize the situation within the disputed areas South China Sea “were met with passivity” by the Philippine government.

China presented 11 concept documents proposing ways to administer the second Thomas Shoal and fishing issues within the Scarborough Shoal, the Manila Times reported, citing a Chinese official.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied the Chinese official’s claims, stating that “the Philippine government has under no circumstances ignored China’s proposals.”

The shoal is home to several Filipino soldiers stationed on the island rusting warshipwhich Manila established there in 1999 to strengthen its sovereignty claims.

China claims almost all the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Bank, and has deployed ships to patrol the disputed atoll, which lies throughout the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
