Thailand and China recently launched a direct cargo rail link connecting Nong Khai with the metropolis of Chongqing via Laos, enabling the efficient transportation of fresh agricultural products. Thamanat Prompow, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, who played a key role on this initiative, officially began the maiden voyage of the Thai train carrying the country’s flagship agricultural product, dried longan. This marks the primary milestone of China’s latest land-sea corridor project, which goals to integrate the rail network in Southeast Asia, China and Europe.
The centerpiece of this ambitious project is Chongqing, a megacity in southwestern China with a population of over 31 million. Thanks to this railway, Thailand can now export its abundant agricultural products not only to China but additionally to international markets. The launch ceremony was attended by leading corporations equivalent to PTT Plc, Global Multimodal Logistics Co Ltd, Pan-Asia Silk Road Co Ltd (PAS) and the National Railway of Thailand.
Meanwhile, in Chongqing, a freight train carrying industrial sodium sulfate began its journey to Thailand. The launch event was chaired by the Vice Mayor of Chongqing and attended by officials from the Thai Consulate in Chengdu and the Lao Embassy.
Filled with delicious fruits equivalent to durian, mangosteen, longan and coconut, the Thai train has been designed to satisfy the demands of the Chinese market. In turn, the train from China is carrying sodium sulfate for industrial purposes, which is meant to support Thailand’s industrial sector.
Freight trains will intersect on the route, ensuring smooth exchange of products and completion of the journey inside 4 days. The frequency of this revolutionary service can be adjusted depending on the growing demand for these sought-after goods.
From 2024, the cargo repertoire can be expanded to incorporate frozen chicken, able to hit the patron market in western China.
This rail connection isn’t just a traditional connection; is an integral a part of the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, creating a fancy network connecting Asia with Africa and Europe. As these trains move forward, they symbolize greater than just industrial activity – they symbolize a world that’s becoming smaller, more integrated and more interconnected.
