Daim Zainuddin says he amassed wealth before entering Malaysian politics because of this of investigation: ‘I actually have all the time had assets’

MalaysiaFormer Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin collected his fortune long before he entered politics.

According to Daim, he was “a reasonably wealthy and successful businessman” whose involvement in business had been the topic of books and articles even before his appointment as minister.

“I have always had assets and properties abroad since the 1970s,” he said in his follow-up statement.

The affidavit was filed together with an application by Daim and his members of the family looking for permission to initiate a judicial review to challenge the investigation conducted against them by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

His business experience has all the time been in the general public domain and Daim said he could have gained more wealth had he not joined politics.

“If I had stayed in business and done nothing to actively grow these assets, the value of my liquid shares alone would be worth over 50 billion ringgit ($10.8 billion) today.

“This is my personal cost of today’s decision to join the government.

“As the above numbers show, my decision to join the government and serve the country resulted in huge financial losses for me and my family,” he said.

On January 10, Daim and his family filed a motion to refer the MACC case to court.

In the appliance, Daim and his wife Naimah Khalid named MACC and the prosecutor as the primary and second defendants.

Apart from Daim and Naimah, the opposite complainants were their 4 children and Ilham Tower, which was occupied by MACC.

Daim and the family want the court to declare MACC’s actions were, amongst other things, illegal, unconstitutional and void.

According to the Notice of Motion, they’re looking for a declaration that the MACC and its officers don’t have any reasonable cause to research Daim and his family which might result in criminal proceedings for any offense under the MACC Act 2009 or the anti-money laundering, Act on the financing of anti-terrorist activities and proceeds from illegal activities of 2001.

They demanded a declaration that even when any charges were brought against him and his family, they’d be unconstitutional and invalid because they’d not receive a good trial.

The family can be looking for a writ of certiorari against the MACC and its officers quashing all investigations, in addition to an injunction restraining any further investigations.

Daim and his family also demanded the return of seized property, property and money.

The case is scheduled to be heard online on January 16.
