Indonesia’s commitment to international peace and security was demonstrated when Marsudi highlighted its proactive role in co-sponsoring the UN General Assembly resolution on the protection of civilians and compliance with legal and humanitarian obligations. The resolution adopted on 27 October 2003 exemplifies their unwavering commitment to addressing violence and human rights violations against civilians.

ASEAN’s position on the situation within the Gaza Strip

Marsudi focused on the ASEAN community, emphasizing the importance of collective response to crises. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers issued an announcement strongly condemning acts of violence against civilians, including ASEAN residents, and calling for urgent humanitarian assistance. Marsudi stressed that the peace and stability that ASEAN has enjoyed for over fifty years shouldn’t be taken without any consideration. She stressed the necessity for further efforts to keep up this peace.

The role of ASEAN in the worldwide landscape

In the present global landscape marked by major power contests, food and energy crises, and ongoing conflicts, Marsudi emphasized the crucial role of ASEAN. As ASEAN Chair, Indonesia is actively addressing these challenges, each current and future. It is noteworthy that they managed to beat their differences and find common ground within the negotiations, even within the face of complex geopolitical dynamics.

The way forward for ASEAN

Marsudi provided insight into ASEAN’s vision beyond 2025. This vision goals to create a people-centric, adaptive and resilient ASEAN, able to coping with the complexities of the trendy world. Key areas of focus include strengthening decision-making in ASEAN and promoting cooperation in various sectors corresponding to energy, finance, digital economy and sustainable blue and green economies.

Expanding the ASEAN TAC

Serbia, Panama and Kuwait recently joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), becoming the 52nd, 53rd and 54th countries to accomplish that. Retno Marsudi emphasized the role of TAC in promoting friendly relations, dialogue and peaceful coexistence within the region, especially within the context of current geopolitical tensions. She stressed the importance of leveraging the growing enthusiasm for TACs to reinforce regional stability and address common challenges, including climate change and transnational crime. In 2023, Saudi Arabia also joined the TAC, bringing the entire number of latest signatories to 4 in the identical 12 months.
