During the 67th IAEA General Conference, Indonesia was successfully elected by acclamation as a member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2023-2025 term (25-28 September). As a member of the Board of Governors, Indonesia will represent the Southeast Asia and the Pacific (SEAP) region.
During this term, the Government of Indonesia can be represented by Damos Dumoli Agusman, who serves as Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia in Vienna, Austria, and Governor.
Agusman said Indonesia will proceed to actively support the event of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and technical cooperation. Moreover, Indonesia can also be willing to advertise the transfer of nuclear technology to developing countries.
Agusman also said that Indonesia has gained a variety of positive advantages from its cooperation with the IAEA in the usage of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. These advantages include the environment, agriculture and food security. He also disclosed that currently, Indonesia and the IAEA have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) on the “Rays of Hope” program, which goals to make use of nuclear technology within the treatment of cancer.
The Board of Governors is the important thing policy-making body of the IAEA, chargeable for overseeing and making recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA’s financial reports, programs and budgets. It also has the ability to contemplate applications for membership, approve safeguards agreements and appoint the Director General of the IAEA with the consent of the General Conference.
Indonesia is a member of the IAEA Board of Governors together with countries reminiscent of Algeria, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, South Korea, Paraguay and Spain.
Meanwhile, the candidacies of Armenia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan required a vote, which Armenia and Ukraine won.
