22 countries will take part in the forty third ASEAN Summit in Jakarta

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi announced that 22 countries will take part in the forty third ASEAN summit, scheduled for September 9-10, 2023 in Jakarta.

The summit can be attended by the leaders of 10 ASEAN member states and their dialogue partners, including China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the United States.

Retno revealed that the summit agenda will include discussions on various regional and global issues, including the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, maritime security and the situation in Myanmar.

At a press conference on Friday (September 9), Retno emphasized that the summit provides a possibility for ASEAN to strengthen its central role in shaping the regional architecture and addressing common challenges.

Additionally, the summit will adopt several key documents, reminiscent of the ASEAN Comprehensive Framework for Recovery, the ASEAN Outlook for the Indo-Pacific region, and the ASEAN Declaration on Human Resource Development for a Changing World of Work.

Additionally, the summit will see the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a significant trade agreement covering 15 countries within the Asia-Pacific region.

Retno assured that Indonesia has taken measures to make sure the security of all participants by implementing stringent health protocols, and expressed hope for the success of the summit and its positive impact on peace, stability and prosperity within the region and the world.
