Indonesia, along with China, South Korea and Japan, successfully secured a seat on the UNWTO Executive Board for the 2023-2027 term, representing the dynamic East Asia and Pacific region. This remarkable achievement paves the best way for Indonesia to actively contribute to the success of the UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in October 2023.
This was announced last Friday (June 15) in the course of the fifty fifth session of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific (CAP) in Cambodia. During the meeting, Indonesia won probably the most votes and secured one among the 4 seats within the Executive Council. Receiving a complete of 16 votes, Indonesia managed to beat five other candidates, giving it probably the most votes among the many 19 CAP member countries eligible to vote.
As the representative of the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific, Indonesia has a vital responsibility in shaping UNWTO’s programs within the Asia-Pacific region, which shall be presented to the General Assembly. Through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the event of the tourism sector within the East Asia, ASEAN and Pacific regions. It focuses on sustainable tourism development, human resource empowerment, digital adaptation and tourism transformation.
As a member of the G20, Indonesia can also be committed to becoming a bridge connecting perspectives and goals between developed and developing countries within the tourism sector, with the hope of ensuring advantages for each parties in a sustainable manner.
Moreover, Indonesia has also taken a step forward by becoming a member of the “Redesigning Tourism for the Future” task force. Through this initiative, Indonesia hopes to create a brand new concept of tourism and make a positive impact on the worldwide and native tourism sector.
