Philippine elections: Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter Sara will run for vp

Daughter of the leader of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte announced her candidacy for vp, her spokesman announced on Saturday, ending months of speculation about her electoral plans for 2022.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, 43, entered the vice presidential race as a proxy after her political party’s original candidate withdrew, her spokeswoman, Mayor Christina Garcia-Frasco, said in a press release.

Shortly after her candidacy papers were filed by a representative of a political party Ferdinand Marcos Jnrthe late Filipino dictator’s son and namesake, who registered as a presidential candidate, welcomed Duterte-Carpio as his vp.

Garcia-Frasco said Duterte-Carpio will make an announcement soon.

Duterte-Carpio’s decision to hunt the country’s No. 2 seat got here as a surprise because she had led opinion polls all 12 months as the popular presidential candidate.

“It was a surprise,” said Antonio La Vina, a professor of law and politics at Ateneo de Manila University. “The next surprise is who the vice president is for.”
