Vietnam’s parliament elects a brand new president, Vo Van Thuong

As part of intensive anti-corruption measures, Vietnam’s National Assembly approved Vo Van Thuong because the country’s recent president.

Lawmakers approved Thuong, 52, as president on Thursday in a special session after the ruling Communist Party nominated him as its sole candidate on Wednesday.

Although the presidency is essentially ceremonial, it holds one in all the 4 most significant political positions in Vietnam.

Thuong received the support of 487 of the 488 lawmakers present within the National Assembly, based on state-run Viet Nam News.

Thuong’s appointment comes at a time of political unrest in Vietnam, where the all-powerful Communist Party is stamping out corruption and factional fighting has led to the firing of many ministries.

The elections got here after his predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, was abruptly ousted in January. The party held him liable for “violations and misconduct” committed by officials under his command.

The country’s “burning furnace” anti-corruption campaign was seen to have significantly intensified with Phuc’s departure as president.

In his first speech to parliament as Vietnam’s recent leader, Thuong declared he would “definitely” proceed the fight against corruption.

According to Viet Nam News, the recently elected president pledged through the swearing-in ceremony to “make every effort to best fulfill the duties and mission entrusted by the party, state and nation.”

According to the news source, he also promised to “repeatedly study and follow President Ho Chi Minh’s ideology, morality and lifestyle.”

Thuong, the youngest member of the party’s Politburo, the country’s highest decision-making body, is taken into account a celebration veteran who began his political profession in communist youth organizations while still a student.
