Michelle Yeoh had to attend 59 years for her first leading role in a Hollywood film. It took the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 95 years to award best actress to a girl who identifies as Asian.
The Malaysian-born actress, widely considered a front-runner for best actress on the upcoming Academy Awards, told TIME last month that she had “reconsidered” that fact for her role as Evelyn Wang in “Everywhere, All at Once.” that no Asian woman has ever won an Oscar for Best Actress.
She continued, “And it isn’t just me – I feel like my entire Asian community has considered it.”
“They come up to me and say, ‘You’re doing this for us,’” Yeoh told TIME.
The Academy Awards have faced criticism previously for favoring mostly white actors in nominations. However, several Asian performers received nominations from the Academy this yr, including Hong Chau for “The Whale” and Yeoh’s Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu. According to Variety, that is essentially the most Asian actors within the history of the Academy nominated for acting awards.

Yeoh was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor on the Gotham Independent Film Awards and in addition won Best Actress awards from the Saturn Awards and the Hollywood Critics Association for her performance within the film. She can be nominated on March 4 for the Film Independent Spirit Awards for best leading role.
