Travelers trying to plan a visit in 2022 should consider visiting places like Iceland, New Zealand and Canada, that are among the many top three safest countries in keeping with the travel insurer Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection‘s (BHTP) Seventh Annual State of Travel Insurance Report. The report also lists the safest cities on this planet, with Montreal, Amsterdam and Tokyo taking the highest three places.
To determine these rankings, BHTP analyzes a mixture of State of Travel Insurance 2022 survey responses from travelers who’ve been to the destinations in query and a number of other external data sources. These additional sources assess security issues comparable to terrorism, weather disasters, health measures, and the protection of girls and minorities.

To discover the safest countries, BHTP asked respondents which countries they’d traveled to within the last five years and allowed only those that had visited chosen destinations to rank them based on specific safety criteria. BHTP then complemented these rankings with other indicators, including the Global Peace Index, in addition to the Pandemic Performance Index based on data from Our World in Data, calculating a weighted rating that reflects each country’s overall security.
For the safest cities, BHTP chosen destinations from easily accessible lists created by expert sources including Expedia and American Express, narrowing the list to 23 cities. As with the safest countries, only travelers who had previously visited these cities were in a position to rate them based on various safety measures and private experiences. Finally, combining these numbers with the outcomes of recent safety studies conducted by The Economist and GeoSure Global, BHTP presented the ultimate results.
The State of Travel Insurance survey also asked people to share what they consider is the most important threat to travel in 2022. Not surprisingly, 56% said disease epidemics and 51% said international terrorism. However, it’s price noting that these numbers are roughly 7% lower than within the 2021 study.
The BHTP State of Travel Insurance Survey has been conducted each fall since 2015 by Polymath Research + Marketing, using independent national panels to survey hundreds of consumers about future travel insurance expectations and travel habits.
