Jokowi attending the ASEAN summit: “I need our partnership to be stronger”

The ASEAN-New Zealand summit meeting will kick off a series of ASEAN summits by which Jokowi’s partners will participate,

“I would really like to start out this meeting by congratulating Jacinda Ardern on her re-election as Prime Minister of New Zealand,” Jokowi said on Saturday.

“Today, ASEAN and New Zealand celebrate 45 years of their partnership. I want our partnership to be stronger on some key issues in the future.”

He said ASEAN countries must follow New Zealand’s example by strengthening relations with countries within the South Pacific region.

“This good relationship will strengthen our partnership in the South Pacific, especially in the areas of fisheries and climate change. ASEAN’s Indo-Pacific outlook is a springboard for us in developing our cooperation with the South Pacific,” he said. Based on a press release from the Presidential Secretariat, Jokowi will attend the second biennial ASEAN-Australia Summit, the twenty third ASEAN Plus Three Summit (APT), highlighting efforts to strengthen economic integration with Australia’s agreement to sign RCEP.

“I believe that RCEP will be a catalyst for economic recovery in the region and even the world,” Jokowi said.

He also encouraged greater stability and security within the region as a basis for economic recovery after the pandemic. Joint Statement on strengthening cooperation under the Free Trade Agreement and combating Covid-19 on a shared commitment to limit the impact of the pandemic on trade, global and regional investment and restore economic and trade confidence by ensuring market openness, trade facilitation and exchange of experience/information .
  3. Joint Statement of the Second ASEAN-Australia Biennial Summit.
  4. ASEAN-New Zealand Joint Leaders’ Vision Statement on the forty fifth Anniversary of the ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue Relationship: A Legacy of Partnership, a Shared Future.
  5. Joint Statement of the twenty third ASEAN-Japan Summit on Cooperation on the ASEAN Perspective for the Indo-Pacific as a Form of Implementation of the ASEAN Perspective for the Indo-Pacific.
