Online comparison site Cable has ranked the countries with the fastest broadband web on the earth based on over 267 million speed tests across 207 countries or territories. This is the third 12 months of evaluation, and the 2019 rating uses data collected within the 12 months to May 8, 2019.
KEY HEADLINES
- The average global broadband speed is 11.03 Mbps (megabits per second).
- Taiwan has the fastest web speeds on the earth, overtaking Singapore with a median speed of 85.02 Mbps.
- Yemen has the slowest web on the earth – average speed is just 0.38 Mbps.
In Yemen, it might take over 30 hours to download a 5GB movie file, while someone in Taiwan could do it in eight minutes. - The five countries with the fastest web have download speeds roughly 125 times faster than the five slowest.
- 37 of the 50 countries with the fastest web are in Europe, 10 in Asia or Oceania (Asia-Pacific), two in North America and just one in Africa.
- In 141 countries, average speeds are below 10Mbps, which is taken into account by UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom to be the minimum required to satisfy the demands of a typical family or small business.
It’s no wonder that Europe has the world’s largest concentration of nations with the fastest web. Jersey is the fastest jurisdiction in Europe, offering a median speed of 67.46 Mbps. Sweden is the fastest country in Europe with a median speed of 55.18 Mbps.
Denmark (5) and Luxembourg (7) aren’t far behind with average speeds of 43.99 and 40.12 Mbps respectively. Of the 54 territories measured in Europe, only Turkey (102) and Armenia (110) are outside the highest 100.
The UK is in thirty fourth place, up one place and three.8Mbps faster than last 12 months, with a median speed of twenty-two.37Mbps.
The Asia-Pacific region is a more diverse area, with a number of the fastest territories on the earth – Taiwan (1), Singapore (2), Japan (6), New Zealand (17) and Hong Kong (19) – and a number of the slowest: East Timor (206), Turkmenistan (203), Tajikistan (192) and Afghanistan (184).
The United States (15) has the fastest broadband within the Americas with a median speed of 32.89 Mbps. Generally speaking, Latin American countries are on the slower end of the regional scale. The Cayman Islands has the fastest web within the region with a median speed of 16.12 Mbps. Venezuela (183) has the bottom speeds within the Americas, with a median speed of just 1.37 Mbps.
Of the slowest countries by way of broadband connections, 12 are within the Arab States, 10 in Asia-Pacific and three in Latin America. Only the United Arab Emirates (67) and Bahrain (94) amongst Arab countries aren’t in the highest 100.
Africa stays a way behind the remainder of the world in terms of broadband provision, with 25 of Africa’s 50 slowest performing countries. Madagascar is the fastest African country, rating thirty third with a median speed of twenty-two.57 Mbps.
