Leaked gay sex video: New Malaysia a bit like old as politics returns to gutter

And the proven fact that the brand new film shows the 2 men together makes it worse, says political scientist James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute.

The minister says gay-themed erotic movies are a “nefarious plot” to spoil him

“If the film had shown a person having sex with a woman, the damage would have been less because it would have been seen as ‘just’ adultery. Islamic morality has been mixed with politics here,” Chin said.

“Every Malay political leader is now forced to show that he is Muslim enough or at least an Islamic advocate. The same thing happened in neighboring Indonesia.”

Looks like having a mistress in Malaysian politics is not enough to destroy you.

In 2008, Chua Soi Lek, a Chinese Malaysian politician from the state of Johor, was forced to resign from office Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and government positions after a widely circulated DVD showing him having sex with a younger woman in a hotel room.

Within two years, he regained the leadership of his party.

Same-sex relations are still a “taboo” in Malaysia, especially within the Malay Muslim community, said Associate Professor Awang Azman Awang Pawi of the University of Malaya’s Institute of Malay Studies.

Ethnic Malays make up greater than 65 percent of Malaysia’s voters, making them the biggest and strongest group.

They are also essential for the survival of the ruling coalition Alliance of Hopewhich is battling declining support after allegedly failing to meet some key election guarantees made last May.

Mahathir’s staunch defense of Azmin also raised eyebrows amongst a skeptical public who remember how within the Nineties, during his first term as prime minister, Mahathir publicly denounced then deputy Anwar following accusations of corruption and sodomy.

Twice accused of sodomy – once in 1998 and again in 2008 – Anwar received a full royal pardon last 12 months, but speculation about his sexuality continues to hassle him.

Analysts say Anwar’s first sodomy accusation set the stage for the next turmoil in Malaysian politics.

“This was a hallmark of Mahathir’s first era and it repeats itself now that he is back in power,” Awang Azman said.

Some consider Anwar’s camps have leaked sex videos in an try to thwart Azmin’s probabilities of leapfrogging him politically – which he vehemently denies – while others consider Mahathir, 93, is planning to do away with each Anwar and Azmin, who’re party chairman and vice-chairman respectively People’s Justice (PKR).

Since the leaked video, allegedly recorded on May 11, Anwar and Azmin haven’t been seen together in public last Tuesday.

The prime minister’s appointment of certainly one of Anwar’s fiercest critics, a legal activist Koya latheregarding the role of the pinnacle of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), also sparked speculation that the administration is attempting to keep Anwar, who is predicted to take over as prime minister before 2023, in check.

In an announcement posted to Facebook, Haziq called on the MACC to analyze Azmin as an “unsuitable” leader.

Latheefa recused herself from all investigative proceedings, leading critics to suggest she was quickly designated a “lame duck.”

“As a former PKR member, she withdrew to avoid conflict of interest. However, this undermines MACC’s independence by creating the impression that it belongs to Azmin’s camp,” Awang Azman said.

The independence of public institutions is another issue that Malaysian leaders are struggling with, Awang Azman said.

The latest sex film has shed light on the issue despite carefully planned political appointments of top civil servants to gain public trust.

Mahathir’s insistence that the videos are fake also “creates a dilemma for police and investigating parties.”

“He should remain neutral. The executive should not be accused of interference,” Awang Azman said.

Malaysia can expect more such scandals, each real and pretend, despite guarantees of a “New Malaysia” after Pakatan Harapan’s decisive election victory last 12 months.

“With the most recent technological advances, e.g deep fakesI won’t be surprised if this becomes a daily practice every few years,” Chin said
