Which countries are best and worst prepared to fight the epidemic? In October last 12 months Global Health Security Index was published examining this very issue. This was the primary comprehensive assessment of worldwide health security capabilities in 195 countries.
The index analyzed levels of preparedness, specializing in whether countries had the fitting tools to take care of large-scale disease outbreaks, with scores measured on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the very best level of preparedness.
The United States has the strongest measures and took first place with a rating of 83.5, followed by the United Kingdom with 77.9 and the Netherlands with 75.6. China was further up the rankings with a rating of 48.2, taking 51st place.
The map below illustrates the state of preparedness all over the world, clearly showing Africa’s vulnerability to coping with large-scale outbreaks. This is evidenced by the most important Ebola outbreak in 2014, which devastated parts of West Africa, killing over 10,000 people, prompting many countries to extend their very own containment measures. At least up to now, no country in Africa has confirmed a case of coronavirus infection.
Here is a rating of the preparedness levels of Southeast Asian countries:
- Thailand 6
- Malaysia 18
- Singapore 26
- Indonesia 30
- Vietnam 50
- Philippines 53
- Burma 72
- Laos 73
- Cambodia 89
- Brunei 128
