Mandalay is a city and former royal capital in northern Burma (formerly Burma) on the Irrawaddy River. In its center is the restored Mandalay Palace from the Konbaung dynasty, surrounded by a moat. The top of Mandalay Hill offers views of the town via a covered staircase. At her feet within the Kuthodaw Pagoda are a whole bunch of marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures.

Founded in 1857 by King Mindon, replacing Amarapura as the brand new royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty, Mandalay is the second largest city in Burma, after Rangoon. Located on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, 716 km (445 mi) north of Rangoon. It was the last royal capital of Burma before the annexation of the dominion by the British Empire in 1885.

Today, Mandalay is the economic center of Upper Burma and is taken into account the middle of Burmese culture.
