A married Singaporean man admits he beat his girlfriend to death after checking out she had had multiple relationships

The court heard that Krishnan met Mallika in 2015. They began a romantic relationship shortly thereafter while Krishnan was still married to a different woman.

In November 2015, Krishnan’s wife returned home to seek out Krishnan and Mallika drinking alcohol in the master suite.

The indignant wife used profanity towards Krishnan, who punched her within the face and grabbed a bottle of whiskey.

Because she was afraid of being hit with the bottle, the wife apologized and later obtained a private protection order against Krishnan. They remain married to today.

Krishnan continued dating Mallika until her death. He admitted that in 2017 he hit her a minimum of once for a “trivial matter”, but from January 2019 the harassment intensified.

This comes after Mallika admitted to having sexual relations with other men, corresponding to when Krishnan was in prison from October 2018 to December 2018.

On January 15, 2019, a day before the fatal attack, Mallika made the same statement while drinking alcohol with Krishnan at his apartment.

Krishnan responded by punching her, punching her within the ribs and kicking her within the thigh.

Mallika pleaded with Krishnan not to go away, but he grabbed her by the neck and pushed her, making her fall and hit her head on the wardrobe.

Mallika stood up, stumbled into the kitchen, and slumped in front of the cupboard.

Krishnan pushed her brow in order that it hit the locker after which helped her up.

Mallika was taken to hospital the subsequent day with bruises on her hips and diverse abrasions on her face, hands and forearms.

Meanwhile, Krishnan drank alcohol throughout the day on January 16, 2019.

That evening, the couple spoke to Mallika’s sister on the phone about Mallika’s relationship with one other person.

After the conversation ended around 11:30 p.m., Krishnan felt indignant and frustrated with Mallika’s relationships with other men and commenced attacking her again.

He punched her within the face, grabbed her by the hair, punched and kicked her, kicking her even while she was on the bottom.

After helping her into bed, Krishnan realized that she was not respiration or responding.

At around 1.40am on January 17, 2019, he called the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF).

Krishnan then called his nephew and asked him to go to the ward and check on Mallika, admitting that he had hit her. Court documents don’t indicate whether Krishnan left the apartment after she was attacked.

The nephew found Mallika lying on the bed together with her eyes closed and her face severely swollen. He couldn’t feel a pulse, so he called his uncle and asked what happened.

In response, Krishnan said he called an ambulance.

SCDF officers found Mallika lying on a bed stained with what seemed to be blood. She was pronounced dead around 1:50 a.m.

Krishnan surrendered around 1 p.m. on the Police Cantonment Complex that day and was arrested.

The autopsy revealed that Mallika’s explanation for death was “head trauma”, but in addition showed multiple other injuries.

These include multiple rib fractures, bruising throughout his body, bleeding in his head and a “midline shift” in his brain.

Krishnan underwent a psychiatric evaluation and was found to be affected by an accommodation order on the time of the offence. He was also drunk, however the psychiatrist didn’t find any connection between his state of intoxication, mental illness and the crime committed.

In a subsequent report, the psychiatrist found that Krishnan also suffered from intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a condition involving frequent impulsive outbursts of anger or aggression. He also had a history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, although he was in remission.

The psychiatrist found that Krishnan’s IED “contributed to some extent” to the crime, but didn’t in itself impair his judgment and self-control.

However, he said the extent of violence inflicted on the victim was likely on account of alcohol poisoning adding to the IED.

Krishnan has multiple convictions dating back to 2003 for offenses including housebreaking at night, using punitive force against a government official, using vulgar words against a government official and disorderly conduct.

On Friday, prosecution counsel and counsel Ramesh Tiwary didn’t present any arguments on the decision. Instead, they asked for time to organize arguments on “certain issues which have arisen,” and their request was granted.

The case might be heard again on April 19.
