With 95% local content, the Palembang LRT showcases Indonesian engineering capabilities

The country’s daybreak rail transport (LRT) has finally launched to welcome the 2018 Asian Games within the capital of South Sumatra.

Construction of LRT with 24 kilometers of elevated track stretching between the international airport. Sultan Mahmoud Badaruddin II and the Jakabaring sports center in town lasted 2.5 years and showed the capabilities of Indonesian engineers in constructing modern infrastructure.

The Rp 10.9 trillion project has 95% local participation. The cost is comparatively low-cost in comparison with the prices of Malaysia and Manila within the Philippines.

Why could it’s cheaper? It is built by moderately paid local engineers with loads of local content.

The investment was built by the state-owned construction company PT Waskita Karya.

Waskita Karya I Gusti chief executive Ngurah Putra said the corporate used local engineers to perform all construction work. Imports were only needed for concrete strips, which aren’t yet produced locally.

The wagons are manufactured and supplied by the state-owned rolling stock company PT INKA, which allows the federal government to avoid wasting large amounts of foreign exchange.

PT INKA director Budi Noviantoro was particularly pleased with the project, saying that the LRT used buses designed by Indonesians, adding: “It was not something unusual.”

The cost of buying trainsets can be relatively low at Rs48.5 billion in comparison with the trainset prices paid in other countries, he said.

Construction of the ability, which began in 2014, is predicted to be accomplished this month to start operations ahead of the 18th Asian Games in August this yr. Palembang and Jakarta will co-host the largest sports event in Asia.

Due to the various sharp bends, the rails have non-standard dimensions, but are designed specifically for the conditions, and the train speed is proscribed to 50–60 kilometers.

“This shows the nation’s potential for innovation in building modern infrastructure in urban areas,” the observer said.

LRT uses engines imported from Germany because that country couldn’t yet produce engine components.

PT INKA, nonetheless, said it was optimistic that it was only a matter of time before the engine was produced as progress had been made in research conducted by many Indonesian higher education institutions.

Meanwhile, PT INKA focused its efforts on the production of railway trains, including for export. PT INKA exported 500 pieces of passenger train wagons to Bangladesh and three locomotives to the Philippines. Currently, INKA has received an order from Thailand, however the order continues to be under negotiation. More orders are expected from other countries.

President Joko Widodo expressed optimism that Indonesia might be among the many world-class LRT producers in the longer term.

The president said LRT could be in-built other areas of the country, adding: “This time South Sumatra, then Jakarta, and the plan is for Medan, Surabaya and Bandung.”

“It is not impossible that we will export LRT,” he said on board the LRT during a trial run from Icon Mall station to Jakabaring station in Palembang.

He said Indonesia’s LRT is way more comfortable than LRT he has tried in other countries, adding: “We should be pleased with what we’ve achieved.”

The LRT line is required not only to facilitate transportation through the Asian Games, but additionally in the long run as it might address congestion on city streets.
