Video footage of the attack shows a person wearing a black T-shirt rushing towards a black vehicle and stabbing Wiranto, who fell to the bottom. Media reports say the girl then attacked the local police chief, who was attending Wiranto’s welcome party.
Police said a 31-year-old man named Syahril Alamsyah, alias Abu Rara, and a 21-year-old woman, Fitri Andriana, were later arrested as perpetrators of the attack.
The attack on Wiranto was the primary successful attack by Islamic State against a senior Indonesian government official.

A senior counterterrorism source said South China Morning Mail that Abu Rara was known to have had intentions to perform terrorist attacks since October 1 and had purchased a three-piece set of Ninja-style knives from an internet store.
The source believes Wiranto was stabbed because he happened to be near the suspect’s house, just 300 meters away.
“The suspect lived just 300 meters from the helicopter landing pad where Wiranto was heading… hence he was attacked as he was getting out of his car. Wiranto is seen as a representative of the government,” the source said.
