Last week, Krishnan (40) pleaded guilty within the High Court. His sentence was backdated to the day of his arrest.
He began dating Mallika in 2015, but court documents show he was already married to a different woman. Mallika had two daughters from two previous marriages.

Sometime in November 2015, Krishnan’s wife caught them drinking alcohol in the master suite of their marital home.
Upset, she uttered obscenities at Krishnan, who then punched her within the face before grabbing a bottle of whiskey.
Fearing he would throw the bottle at her, his wife apologized and later obtained a private protection order against him.
Krishnan and Mallika continued their relationship until her death.
Court documents show that in their time together, Krishnan hit Mallika at the very least once in 2017 “over a trivial matter.”
The violence escalated in early 2019 when Mallika admitted to having sex with several men, including while Krishnan was in prison in 2018.
Krishnan kicked and punched Mallika within the face, punched her within the ribs and kicked her within the thigh on January 15, 2019.

This happened after she admitted to cheating on her after they drank alcohol of their shared apartment.
When she begged him not to depart, he grabbed her by the neck and pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head on a closet.
She stood up, stumbled into the kitchen, and slumped in front of the cupboard. He told her to stand up and when she didn’t accomplish that, he pushed her within the brow, causing her to hit her head on the cabin.
The next day, Mallika checked into Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and was found to have several scratches and bruises.
While Mallika was within the hospital, Krishnan drank alcohol throughout the day.
In the evening, they talked to Mallika’s sister on the phone about Mallika’s relationship with one other man.

Feeling offended and frustrated along with her various relationships with other men, Krishnan attacked Mallika again. He punched her within the face, grabbed her by the hair, punched and kicked her.
After repeatedly kicking her while she was on the bottom, he helped her into bed and realized she was not responding or respiration.
He then called the Singapore Civil Defense Force at around 1.35am. Later that night, Mallika was pronounced dead.
An autopsy revealed that she died from head trauma, with several bruises on her scalp, neck, face and whole body. Several ribs were also broken.
During Monday’s sentencing, deputy prosecutor Timotheus Koh told the court that Krishnan asked a friend to let him sleep in his apartment after the attack.
On the afternoon of January 17, 2019, Krishnan surrendered to the police.
Intermittent explosive disorder
After his arrest, Krishnan was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder – a condition characterised by frequent impulsive outbursts of anger or aggression – which was found to have contributed to the crime.
However, court documents state that the extent of violence he inflicted on his girlfriend was “likely brought on by alcohol intoxication, which aggravated intermittent explosive disorder.”
The prosecutor’s office demanded a sentence of 15 to 18 years in prison, calling on the court to “send a transparent signal that the courts don’t tolerate violence of this kind.”
Koh said that although Krishnan was diagnosed with a mental disorder after committing the crime, he had engaged in “socially unacceptable behavior” previously, including violence drunk.
This included Krishnan’s plea for leniency in 2018 for insulting and spitting at cops, during which he admitted that alcohol “seriously clouded my decision on the time.”

He said Krishnan had been referred for counseling for domestic violence that occurred between 2015 and 2016 and his actions demonstrated his “propensity to abuse domestic partners.”
“No mitigating weight should be given to the emotions the accused felt following the deceased’s confession about her relationships with other men,” Koh said. “The accused is unable to punish the deceased for her alleged infidelity.”
In mitigation, Krishnan’s lawyer said his client had previously pleaded guilty, surrendered to police and fully cooperated with the investigation.
He added that Krishnan controlled his alcohol consumption – he drank only on weekends when he was not working.
However, it was Mallika’s relationships with other men that “influenced his judgment.”
“He thought alcohol would help him deal with his feelings,” the lawyer said.
The accused knew that he had an inclination to indicate his temper in a socially unacceptable way
Judge Valerie Thean said during sentencing that while Krishnan’s occasional explosive disorder contributed to his violent behavior, alcohol also played a task.
She added that although he was diagnosed with the disorder after committing the crime, “the defendant knew that he was prone to displaying his temperament in a socially unacceptable way” through his past run-ins with the law.
Thean noted that Krishnan had promised in 2018 to change into a reformed person to reduce his effects, but he continued to abuse his wife and girlfriend.
Saying she couldn’t overlook his repeated domestic violence against women, she sentenced him to twenty years in prison.
For culpable homicide not equal to murder, the utmost penalty is life imprisonment and flogging, or imprisonment for as much as 20 years and a effective or flogging.
