US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will meet on February 27-28 within the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.
Holding a signing ceremony during Trump’s visit would help highlight strengthening economic and military ties between the United States and Vietnam.
VietJet, although not owned by the federal government, is increasingly using state visits to showcase major aircraft orders balanced between Boeing and Airbus SE. He signed a contract for the acquisition of 100 narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX aircraft during former US President Barack Obama’s visit to Hanoi in 2016.
The airline is more likely to finalize next week a separate, interim deal agreed last 12 months on the Farnborough Airshow to purchase one other 100 Boeing 737 MAX planes price nearly $13 billion at list prices, sources said on condition of anonymity regarding the expected announcement by VietJet.
Last week, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Vietnam had met international aviation standards, allowing Vietnamese carriers to fly to the country for the primary time and code-share with U.S. airlines.
Last week, VietJet said it plans to purchase wide-body jets able to flying to the U.S. to open routes to U.S. cities with large Vietnamese communities, resembling California.
Another source briefed on the matter said the deal for 100 737 MAX planes was already on Boeing’s books since it had been previously confirmed and listed as an unidentified customer.
Boeing declined to comment. VietJet didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.
VietJet operates 385 flights every day inside Vietnam and to destinations resembling Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia.
