Two Southeast Asian countries have received UN public service awards

The United Nations has recognized two initiatives from Southeast Asian countries with Public Service Awards for innovation and repair excellence.

According to United Nations Department of Economic and Social AffairsThe awards recognize various initiatives that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and represent a promise to depart nobody behind.

In Thailand, the initiative An integrated approach to comprehensive cervical cancer control worked to offer cervical cancer treatment to women in rural areas of Thailand. According to Jhpiego, is an associate fellow of Johns Hopkins University. It uses the “see and treat” method pioneered by Jhpie in a single visit.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the initiative helped reduce malaria cases in Teluk Bentuni Regency in West Papua Province. The initiative is the results of cooperation between the federal government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.

According to State funds, the federal government engaged residents to take part in the treatment and prevention of malaria cases within the region.

These initiatives were chosen from over 400 nominations from 79 countries and received the celebrated UN award.

Globally, winners of the 2018 UN Public Service Awards come from Austria, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand.

The winners presented their initiative on the UN Public Service Forum ‘Transforming Governance to Deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals’, which took place from 21 to 23 June in Marrakech, Morocco.

“Governments play a leading role in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals through the policies they develop and the public services for which they are responsible,” said Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.

“It is essential to ensure that public services improve the lives of all people and leave no one behind.”
