Onda and Vescovo were a two-man team that dived into the ditch using the Limiting Factor. Onda, a microbial oceanographer on the University of the Philippines Institute of Marine Sciences, was invited by Vescovo and his Caladan Oceanic Foundation to participate in a study of one in all the least explored areas on the earth.
The two left their home ship, DSSV Pressure Drop, within the early morning hours of March 22. By noon, a video appeared on their Facebook page showing the crew on board celebrating the landing at an altitude of 10,045 meters.
