Why Singapore beats New Zealand as the perfect destination for expats

This city-state beat New Zealand for the second 12 months in a row and took first place within the study of destinations for emigrants. Singapore is the perfect place to live, work and lift a family abroad, amongst almost 27,000 expatriates in 190 economies, in response to the most recent, ninth edition of HSBC’s annual Expat Explorer report.

Although New Zealand was near Singapore in lots of respects, it was the economy – a category that features earnings and profession prospects – that brought it down. New Zealand ranked forty first within the survey for private funds, well behind Singapore’s eighth place on this metric.

No other economy within the Asia-Pacific region made the highest 10 overall emigration destinations, with Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan making the highest 20. The United States finished thirtieth overall.

MONEY AND ECONOMY

Expats in Singapore earn on average around US$139,000 (S$190,000) per 12 months, which is 43 percent greater than the worldwide average. Emigrants in Hong Kong earn much more – $170,000. Switzerland is the country with essentially the most personal funds, with a median annual income of $188,000.

The highest-paid expats live in Zurich, where greater than two in five earn greater than $200,000, compared with almost a 3rd in Shanghai.

Expats in Singapore are most confident of their adopted country’s economy, with almost three-quarters saying they feel confident, compared with 52 percent within the Asia-Pacific region.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Here’s where New Zealand beats Singapore – by way of overall experience. New Zealand leads in the standard of life and ease of social integration category, with Singapore in fourth place.

Nearly three-quarters of expats in New Zealand say they’ve achieved the goal of improving their quality of life, beating the worldwide average of 52%.

Expats consider Japan the safest country on this planet, followed by Singapore and South Korea. More than eight in 10 expats living in Singapore feel safer than at home, in comparison with 52 percent globally.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS

More than six in ten expats working in Singapore consider it’s an excellent place to develop a profession. Singapore ranks second behind Hong Kong. China in seventh place and India in ninth place are the one two other Asian countries in the highest ten. New Zealand is in 18th place.

Some 58 percent of expatriates in Singapore say it’s an excellent place to begin a business, higher than the worldwide average of 38 percent.

London and New York attract executives seeking to advance their careers. More than 70 percent of expats in each cities say working there’ll improve their profession prospects once they return home, greater than 46 percent globally.

EDUCATION FOR FAMILY LIFE

Sweden stays the perfect place on this planet for families abroad, rating first in the general family category, which covers the standard of colleges and childcare and the price of raising children. Singapore is in third place and New Zealand is in fourth place. Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia round out the highest 20 countries within the Asia-Pacific region.

The quality of education in Singapore is rated as the perfect on this planet. Among expatriates in Singapore, 75 percent consider the standard of education there is best than of their home country, compared with an overall results of 43 percent within the survey.
