The Philippines has invited Jack Ma and his Alibaba Group to work with President Rodrigo Duterte to assist improve management technology and help construct an inclusive economic system that may help small businesses, Bloomberg.com cited Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez as saying recently.
Ma, during a gathering with Philippine government officials in Hangzhou on Feb. 1, said the Philippines has great potential to embrace the technological revolution because e-commerce was designed specifically for developing economies, in line with an announcement from the Philippine Department of Finance.
Dominguez said Duterte was impressed with Ma after they met in Manila in November, and the Philippine leader gave instructions to proceed talks with the tech entrepreneur to search out common areas that Alibaba and the Philippine government could pursue together.
“I will let the president know that there are a lot of elements here that we could use in the Philippines,” said Dominguez, who participated with key government officials in a brand new economy workshop hosted by Alibaba Business School from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.
The lessons learned from the training will help the Duterte administration understand methods to optimize using technology to enhance governance and prepare Filipinos for a future within the digital economy, Dominguez said.
The issues discussed included using cloud computing and massive data platforms – from improving traffic flow and law enforcement to financial risk management and strengthening cybersecurity measures, he added.
Dominguez said strengthening relations between the Philippine government and Alibaba is one technique to further cement bilateral ties between the Philippines and China.
