Singapore will introduce driverless buses on public roads

Singapore plans to introduce driverless buses on public roads by 2022.

The government says the pilot buses will likely be rolled out in three latest districts, which is able to feature less congested roads adapted to bus needs.

The buses will likely be used to make it easier for residents to travel inside their communities and to nearby train and bus stations.

Densely populated Singapore hopes autonomous technology will help the country address land constraints and labor shortages.

“Autonomous vehicles will significantly improve the accessibility and connectivity of our public transport system, especially for the elderly, families with young children and the less mobile,” said Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

The autonomous buses are expected to enrich existing manned bus services and can initially operate during off-peak hours.

Additionally, the federal government plans to permit commuters to order shuttle buses on demand using their mobile phones.

Singapore has less traffic congestion in comparison with many other Southeast Asian cities because of road pricing and policies that promote public transport.

The country also hopes to develop into a pacesetter in autonomous technologies.
