The president kept his promise made to Indonesian students on February 26 in Sydney, Australia, during his state visit.
“We work morning, noon and evening on the Trans-Papua road. What for? For justice to be served, [development] ought to be felt even in essentially the most distant parts of Indonesia,” the president said then.
Jokowi said that ultimately the dirt roads can be paved with asphalt.
The Ministry of Public Works and Housing has set a goal of opening the Trans-Papua road in 2018.
While in Papua. the president also took part in the inspiration stone laying ceremony for the development of a mobile gas power plant in Jayapura, the capital of Papua.
There are three provinces on the island of Papua: West Papua, Central Papua and Papua. The Trans-Papua Road will run from one end of the island to the opposite.
