A number one company in cutting-edge technologies, Apple is willing to determine a research and development center in Indonesia. Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said a mutual agreement had been reached with the American-based company.
“Indonesia will be home to Apple’s R&D center outside the United States, the second largest in the world after Brazil. We should be proud of this.” He was quoted as saying on Wednesday at Idocomtech 2016 at JCC Senayan.
Earlier, the federal government convened a gathering with Apple together with its representatives from the Asia-Pacific region and Silicon Valley representatives. Following the meeting, it’s planned that the research and development facility can be constructed in 2017, in accordance with applicable local law.
“They must (construct). If not, they will not have the opportunity to sell the iPhone 7, as a substitute people will have the opportunity to purchase it abroad,” Rudiantara said.
The Ministry of Communications and Information will cooperate with the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Industry on this process. As for the permit, Rudiantara points to Apple’s strong commitment to use for it.
“It (the permit) is already in the pipeline.” He added.
While the placement stays unclear, Rudiantara said Apple has found some alternatives. However, he suggested that it was not Jakarta but elsewhere.
“I hope not in Jakarta. Why? Indonesia is not only Jakarta and Java. It should focus on Indonesia.”
