COMAC C919: paving the way in which for Chinese aviation dominance in Asia, rivaling Boeing-Airbus

At the top of February, Comac from China launched into its first tour of Southeast Asia. After participating within the Singapore Airshow, they conducted C919 demonstration flights in five SEA countries: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. In long-term competition with Airbus and Boeing, Comac’s C919 is predicted to dominate the aviation market, particularly in China. Comac offers two forms of aircraft: the ARJ21, a regional jet that may accommodate 78 to 97 passengers, and the C919, a single-aisle aircraft that may accommodate 150 to 170 passengers. Meanwhile, the C929 double-aisle long-range aircraft is within the design phase.

The fundamental advantage of the C919 is its price. Although the official price is $100 million, sources near Comac say it may be purchased for half that quantity. Various incentives are also available, including export credits of as much as 85% of the aircraft price, in addition to support for maintenance, repairs, infrastructure and crew training.

While the C919 continues to be awaiting certification by European and U.S. aviation authorities and might only be used commercially in China, aviation analysts consider regulators in several countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America could approve it more quickly.

Although all C919 sales currently occur in China, Southeast Asia is a rapidly growing aviation market with a population of over 700 million and various latest airlines.
